Trekking to Irshal gad
Day 1 Dep Mumbai by 06 am and Arrive in 2 hrs to the base of Irshal Gad the majestic peak of Irshal, locally identified as Vishalgad, takes the cake in beauty as well as permanency.Irshal stands at a height of 1213 feet. The wind has carved out a peculiar, yet beautiful formation in the rocks, forked shape with sharp ridges and a prominent hole in the centre. The structure is reminiscent of a saddle, giving the peak another name of Shivaji’s Saddle. The initial walk is through the settlements of Chowk village where rural life is slowly acquiring an urban touch, due to electrification and constructions. A short walk takes us to the first village, Nanivle, nestled on the banks of a small stream. The climb begins here. The climb is fairly gradual, meandering through deciduous forests and scrubland with teak, bamboo, flame of the forest and karvanda fruits. The shimmering Varose River in the valley forms a beautiful backdrop while climbing up to the peak. Varose now blocked by the Morbe Dam Project, gives life to the local populace and wildlife. Lapwings, wagtails, wire-tailed swallows and a stray black-winged kite may be the reception party of birds along the stream, during winters. However, Indian robin, rufousbacked shrike, black drongo, vultures, as well as common mynas could be seen round the year. The mixed-forest leads us to Vishalwadi, a sleepy village at the foot of the final ascent. From Vishalwadi, a climb along the extreme left ridge and then behind the hill would lead to a small opening above the hole. This is the usual watering point, crucial for all climbers. The view from the top is breathtaking Nature lovers would be awestruck by the large and small waterfalls that adorn the hill-slopes during monsoons. When on the top, one cannot miss the gushing wind in ones hair, with fluffy mist during monsoons and winter mornings. Precaution while moving on the ridge in the mist would be wise. It is difficult to pull oneself back from such peaceful locales, to the hustle-bustle of the city.Be it monsoon, winter, or summer, Irshal is as majestic as ever, always attractive and inviting. In fact, Irshal has been rightly named as it arouses the envy of neighbouring peaks. So, what’re you waiting for get those trekking shoes out now! Trekking to Peth fort
Day 3 In Peth. The cave and the temple carvings date back to the 13th century. Not much is known about the history until the 18th cent. In 1716, this cave was captured by the British. Then later on, on November 2, 1817, it was taken by the Marathas under the leadership of Bapurao who belonged to the second generation of Bajirao. It was recaptured by the British, on December 30, 1817, the very next month, under one Captain Brooks. The British had the fort till 1862; it served as an outpost for keeping vigilance on the surrounding valley and the hills all around it. Basically it's the only big peak in the middle of a big valley surrounded by many hills, which made it strategically important as a watch post. Trekking details.Peth is another fort perched on top of a mountain detached from the main range. The rocky pinnacle stands out like a lone sentinel amidst the lush green countryside. Peth has an interesting fortification in the shape of a funnel with a rocky staircase carved in the middle. The fort is called Kotlighad due to this funnel. The large cave at the base of the fortification The climb to the top is quite easy and gentle except for a few stretches at the end. The trek offers some amazing views of the valley with innumerable cascading silver streaks and passes through thickly wooded parts. Halfway to the peak is the small village of Peth where you can gorge on piping hot local food dal-chawal and bhakri-sabhji. The peak is generally enveloped in mist and is a beautiful experience. After Trek come back to base and drive back to Matheran.Over night in Hotel
