Introduction
to Matheran : Matheran
which means Forest on the Top, is situated in the Matheran range of
sahyadris ( Maharashtra) at a height of 2516 feet/800 Meters.Matheran
is just 100 Kms /65 Miles from Mumbai airport.Once you put your foot
in Matheran the red soil is everywhere ( No Concrete). Automobiles and
vehicles of any sort are not allowed into Matheran Due to ban on motor
vehicles, the modes of transport in Matheran are limited to horses and
rickshaws (pulled by humans) other then walking, however seeing the
various points in Matheran by walking and Horse Riding is equally enjoyable.
Matheran is a continuous poem of shady, thickly wooded paths of red
mud and velvet moss, stretching endlessly. It takes only a few minutes
to realize why Matheran has this untouched, pristine quality about it..
This little hill paradise has been left largely undisturbed, since the
time an Englishman, Hugh Mallet, Collector of Thane, discovered it in
1850 and declared it a fine place for shady walks the last British hill
station in India. In Matheran Monkeys are your companions wherever you
go. They sit in your verandah and on your porch, hugging their babies,
combing their hair, squabbling occasionally as humans do. As you jog
along in your buggy, monkeys dangle themselves strategically, one paw
hanging free to grab your packet of chips. You could wave your crooked
pandhari stick (a kind of walking stick) at them, but their mournful
expressions would melt the sternest heart.

with the Sahayadris to Peth Fort. The cave and the temple carvings date
back to the 13th century. Not much is known about the history until
the 18th cent. In 1716, this cave was captured by the British. Then
later on, on November 2, 1817, it was taken by the Marathas under the
leadership of Bapurao who belonged to the second generation of Bajirao.
It was recaptured by the British, on December 30, 1817, the very next
month, under one Captain Brooks. The British had the fort till 1862;
it served as an outpost for keeping vigilance on the surrounding valley
and the hills all around it. Basically it's the only big peak in the
middle of a big valley surrounded by many hills, which made it strategically
important as a watch post. Trekking details.Peth is another fort perched
on top of a mountain detached from the main range. The rocky pinnacle
stands out like a lone sentinel amidst the lush green countryside. Peth
has an interesting fortification in the shape of a funnel with a rocky
staircase carved in the middle. The fort is called Kotlighad due to
this funnel. The large cave at the base of the fortification The climb
to the top is quite easy and gentle except for a few stretches at the
end. The trek offers some amazing views of the valley with innumerable
cascading silver streaks and passes through thickly wooded parts. Halfway
to the peak is the small village of Peth where you can gorge on piping
hot local food dal-chawal and bhakri-sabhji. The peak is generally enveloped
